Massage sessions typically take place in a conference room, break room or even in an open area beside the work station. A clear 5 × 6 foot floor space should be considered.

Quick access to a restroom would be a bonus for therapist to wash hand between massages (if necessary).

Staying clothed is a convenience of chair massage. Some clients prefer to take off a coat or sweater, but this is optional based on their preference. Most chair massage techniques are based on downward pressure opposed to gliding pressure.

Some contraindications with chair massage are: recent surgeries, bone fracture and certain stages of pregnancy.
